Optimize teamwork, corporate workflows, or protect sensitive information with Syncovery in conjunction with Synology.
What is Synology?
The Synology brand is one of the world’s leading providers of NAS systems (Network Attached Storage) and provides comprehensive solutions for data storage, management and backup. The company’s product range is impressive due to its versatility and intuitive handling, which is why both business and private users benefit from the range.
The core offerings include NAS devices that serve as storage solutions for networks. The portfolio is complemented by hybrid and cloud models that enable seamless integration of local storage solutions with cloud services.
Where is Syncovery installed?
You can install Syncovery on PCs, Macs or servers in your network, or directly on the Synology NAS device. Depending on your needs, Syncovery copies your data as you need it. To back up data on a PC or server, it is a good idea to install Syncovery there (e.g. the Windows version) and copy the data to the NAS via a network path or with SFTP. However, if you want to copy the contents of the NAS device to another storage location – be it a second NAS, another location, or cloud storage, then you should install Syncovery directly on the Synology NAS.
How do I install Syncovery on the Synology NAS?
Installing Syncovery on the Synology NAS device is done through the so-called “Manual Installation”. Download the appropriate Syncovery installation package for Synology from our website and install it using the Package Center in the Synology management environment.
Configuring Syncovery on the Synology NAS
After installation, you can access Syncovery via the icon on the Synology desktop or in the “Main Menu” at the top left. Alternatively, you can enter the IP address of the NAS and include the port number 8999 in your browser. Here’s an example: 192.168.1.25:8999. Syncovery will first show you an SSL configuration page, but you can skip this if you are using it in the LAN using the “nosll” link. You then log in with the standard access data “default” and “pass” and can create your first synchronization and backup jobs via the web GUI.
Note that on the latest Synology operating system, DSM 7, you need to assign Syncovery rights to access folders before you can create a sync or backup job in Syncovery. The process of granting Syncovery access to folders is explained on our page: Syncovery With Synology DSM 7.
To test a job, you should not give it a schedule right away. Instead, please use the “Run With Preview” button to start your profile. Syncovery will then show you a preview of the files to be synchronized, which you can confirm if everything is OK. The copying process then begins.
What type of backups can be carried out with Synology and Syncovery?
With Synology and Syncovery software, you can efficiently implement different backup strategies. Regardless of whether you want to back up data physically on a server, virtually in the cloud or in a hybrid environment – Syncovery ensures the necessary flexibility and reliability. Thanks to the seamless integration with Synology NAS systems, you can create automatic and regular backups of your data.
3-2-1 backups
The 3-2-1 backup rule is a proven data backup concept. You make three copies of the data, two of which are stored on different media types. You store one of them externally, for example in the cloud. Synology NAS systems support this approach by backing up the data on hard drives, while Syncovery automates and manages the backup process. Transferring the backup to the cloud is also done via Syncovery, so you can ensure the highest level of security with the help of one tool.
Server backups
Backing up data on a server is particularly easy and efficient when using Synology and Syncovery. With the NAS systems from Synology you have a central storage for managing and backing up your data. It doesn’t matter whether you use the NAS system as a standalone storage or in a network. With the help of Syncovery you can back up your files regularly without any manual effort. Thanks to the automated backup process you have access to current recovery files at any time. Whether daily, weekly or monthly – you determine the intervals of the backups.
Cloud and hybrid backups
By using Synology and Syncovery you can easily implement cloud and hybrid backups. Both backup methods are ideal for companies and private users who want to use both local and cloud storage solutions to ensure maximum data security. Syncovery offers the option of automatically backing up data from your Synology NAS system to the cloud according to a set schedule. Thanks to this hybrid solution, your data is stored in two locations at the same time and is optimally protected against loss or damage.
If your NAS system is being serviced or expanded, you can easily transfer your data to a cloud of your choice. This way, there is no data risk during routine service work.
What type of synchronization is possible with Synology and Syncovery?
Synology and Syncovery open up numerous options for data synchronization. These processes guarantee that your information is always up to date between different storage media. Synchronizing files and folders is particularly beneficial for companies and teams that work on different devices or locations, as they have access to the latest data at all times.
One-way synchronizations
One-way synchronization allows data to be transferred from a source storage location to a destination location. The method is ideal, for example, for making specific information available to team members for further processing.
With Syncovery, you have the option of setting up one-way synchronizations so that files are transferred from a local directory on your NAS system to the cloud or to an alternative storage medium. It is up to you which folders or files you share for this transfer.
Mirrors between two identical Synology systems
If you have two Synology NAS systems, Syncovery has the optimal solution for data mirroring. Thanks to multithreading and the Syncovery Remote Service, the data is synchronized particularly quickly and efficiently, meaning that identical information is always available. This method is primarily intended for companies that store their data at different locations and thus want to achieve a high level of reliability, or for teams that work on joint projects. The smooth integration of Synology and Syncovery ensures that your data is available at all times and redundantly.
Folder-level synchronizations
To exchange specific directories between two or more storage locations, use the folder-level synchronization function. With Syncovery, this process can be precisely configured so that only relevant data is synchronized. This approach offers both companies and private individuals the advantage of managing large data sets and only synchronizing certain folders with each other. This saves valuable storage space and optimizes the synchronization process.
Hybrid synchronizations
Hybrid methods combine the advantages of both physical and cloud-based storage technologies and create a comprehensive data management strategy. With Synology’s NAS systems and the extensive functions offered by the Syncovery tool, you can keep your sensitive data synchronized both on a local NAS system and in the cloud.
This two-pronged model allows you to access the latest versions of the files anytime, anywhere, regardless of whether the connection is made directly via the NAS or via the Internet to the cloud. Such synchronization models are perfect for companies and private individuals who are looking for a flexible, reliable method of managing and backing up their data.
