Notifications via something other than email?

Post by fletch »

I read the most recent release notes about the service change. Will that completely eliminate the current systray icon?

Because I was thinking that the systray icon could turn red or have a red dot overlay when any scheduled profile encountered an error.

I normally leave the main app open - maybe do the same to its icon. Then some method of clearing the error no matter how many profiles had the error. Because that would be obvious as soon as you open the app. Then I don't have to even look at my mail to see if everything ran ok. Just look in the task bar. Because I see that before ever opening my email client.

Hello,
no, the tray icon is not affected by the change to the service architecture. The tray icon is displayed by a different process.

Many thanks for your suggestions, I will keep them in mind!

Ok, so the tray icon remains, but the servicing that it used to do is now performed by the new service?

Here's how Second Copy indicates errors in profiles...a subtle red E. As I get older I have to look close to see it. But that's where I got the idea.

Hello,
well, the service was always separate from the tray icon owning process. Services cannot show tray icons.

Since version 11.2.0, if you click "Install Service", it will now use SyncoveryCL.exe as the service instead of SyncoveryService.exe.

But if you already have the service installed before updating, and don't click that button, then it will continue to use SyncoveryService.exe.

All of this is only relevant if you actually installed the scheduler as a service. If you are just using the background scheduler, then there is no change. The background scheduler is always SyncoveryService.exe. The filename no longer represents its actual use, unfortunately, but renaming it will likely break some things on customer setups, so I am not doing it.

For the difference between service and background scheduler, please see

Got it - I use the background scheduler. Thanks for the explanation and reference.
