I see a feature under the files tab “Number of files to copy in parallel,” how do I determine what my system can do over my 10gb network? I am upgrading my Synology NAS that has spinning disk to a faster better NAS. Plan to run on the two machines below and like to maximize my transfer speed. How many files can I run in parallel?
Apple MacMini M4 Pro 14-Core Chip 64GB Unified RAM | 2TB SSD 20-Core GPU | 16-Core Neural Engine with 10gb connection.
Apple MacStudio M2 Ultra 24-Core CPU 192GB Unified RAM | 4TB SSD 76-Core GPU | 32-Core Neural Engine with 10gb connection.
Number of files to copy in parallel
Re: Number of files to copy in parallel
Hello,
it depends on whether you are copying smaller files or large ones.
With small files, you can easily copy 10-20 in parallel to make the best use of your bandwidth.
But if you copy large files like videos, it makes much less sense and can cause disk fragmentation. Fragmentation is less of an issue with SSDs, but still somewhat undesirable.
With spinning hard drives, copying multiple large files in parallel can cause a lot of disk seeks, which can slow things down.
It takes some tests to determine the best number for your use case.
