Synology in abnormal state when backup is active

Post by Charlie »

We are having an issue when Syncovery is actively backing up, our auto failover cluster is constantly switching from being detectable to being undetectable.

This only happens when the syncovery backup is running, we have shut that backups down for over a week with no errors. And as soon as we start the backups again, they start coming in again.

Our system is 2x RS4017xs+ bound in a hyper availability cluster with a 10GB SFP link to the other RS4017xs+
Both Synoloy Rackstations have intel Xeon 8 core 2.1 Processors with 32GB of RAM
We are on DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 2
Syncovery Version: 9.18d

Attached a screen shot of the logs we see when the backup is running. Support team says they have had no other reports like this, so I was wondering if anyone on the forum has, and found a way to solve it.

Hello,
I think that what your Syncovery job does is probably incompatible with the idea of a High Availability Cluster. It might cause TCP/IP traffic that the passive unit cannot understand, therefore temporarily dropping out of the cluster.

You may need to run the Syncovery job on a machine that is outside of the cluster, such as a standalone PC or server.

Can you describe exactly what the Syncovery job does? Does it upload to a cloud service?

And is Syncovery running on the active or passive unit?

The Synology is running as a 61TB file server, Syncovery is the only backup service we have found that can handle the size of the shares and files. Syncovery is uploading shares to S3 cloud storage. We have it broken in to about 5 jobs, it also seems fine during the build phase, it's only during the upload phase that the cluster has issues.

Syncovery is running on the active unit, with the way Synology handles hyper availability clusters, the passive unit is completely unusable unless a failover event happens, the webgui for the passive unit isn't even available. It does a constant realtime sync of all the data and configuration between the two via a dedicate 10GB heartbeat connection. Which is completely separate from the 10GB uplink to the LAN.

Hello,
did you try reducing the number of file copying threads? The setting is on the Files tab sheet in the profile.

Maybe you could send a log file to support@syncovery.com?

Hello,
were you able to resolve this?

I thought about this some more - if the job cannot run directly on the NAS without affecting the cluster status, then you may need to run it on a PC or server in the network. To benefit from the same folder listing speed, you would then only need to run the Syncovery Remote Service on the NAS. The Remote Service only generated the listing and shouldn't affect the cluster status.

And some description (for the Windows version, but the Linux version does the same tasks):
