Initial tests not working as expected

Post by mhoude »

Hi,

We are trying Syncovery to see if it would fit our needs. We have many TB of data that we need to synchronize from some server shares to a Synology NAS.

We adjusted the file versioning accordingly and did a first synchronization which took about 30 hours, that was expected since it`s the first sync.

After this was completed we started the sync again, we thought it wouldn't take that long since almost nothing have changed since the first pass but the software started to apply versioning on every file and sync a second copy of them.

As an example we had an acronis image dated from 2019 on the server which synced correctly the first pass. On the second pass Syncovery did rename the file with a timestamp and recopied the same file again which will lead to 2 exact same files on the NAS, one with a timestamp (versioned) and the new copy. This file hasn`t changed since 2 years, so why does Syncovery need to version it ?

Any help will be very appreciated.

Thanks

Syncovery uses file names, sizes, and the Last Modified timestamps to determine if a file needs to be copied.

Maybe the timestamps of the initial copies don’t match for some reason?

To test a profile, please run it manually in attended mode and look at the Sync Preview. Compare the file details to determine why a file is to be copied.

If the timestamps are the problem, there are ways to handle that or fix the root cause. Normally, modification timestamps are preserved when copying with Syncovery. But it depends on the protocol and the cooperation of the storage system.

How did you copy, was it to a UNC path or FTP or SFTP?

Hi,

Thanks for answering.

The copy was initiated like this:

\\fileserver\e$ to \\NAS\FileServer\E

Then after it finished I just started it again and the versioning kicked in.

Ok, please don’t let it run automatically. Please run it in attended mode, manually, and look at the Sync Preview.

You can also export the settings by right-clicking the profile, so I can check them - or send a log file to support@syncovery.com.
