Hello
The full restore to a freshly-imaged server completed successfully. A useful and unique capability among backup systems. Bravo Tobias.
Note that the issue I had with the S3 protocol requiring Samba appeared to be a minor problem with the web UI. To solve it, a little clicking around in the ...

Re: Recovery from S3
Hi,
The restore gets the error "Cannot access S3 - cannot load samba library". I can find instructions for installing the samba library but they seem complicated.
Would anyone know the simplest way to allow restore from S3 on a fresh ubuntu image?

Congratulations on releasing 9.23, Tobias.
Thanks for your detailed instructions and suggestions for the recovery profile -- very helpful and a great reference. Such a reference could be essential in the heat of an actual disaster-recovery scenario. In fact, I just had an idea...

Re: Recovery from S3
Great news Tobias. Thank you.
If this works it's a very specialized and useful type of full-server backup / restore - not available, as far as I know, with any other backup tool. Bravo
I'll try a restore, per your instructions, in the morning, and report back.

Re: Recovery from S3
Thanks for your reply, Tobias, and for your offer to experiment with restoring a complete linux file system.
I like your idea of making a renamed copy for restore. But since it will run on another server, I'd need to export/import it. I don't see a way to do that in the web UI. Can you help with ...

Re: End-to-end linux server install
Ok, found the filters - great. I've almost finished the setup. A couple things remain - you said:
metadata, such as permissions, are also lost, unless you choose to "compress each file individually" and choose permissions and extended attributes to be included in compressed files

Re: End-to-end linux server install
Thanks again Tobias - really helpful, especially regarding preserving timestamps and metadata. Bravo.
I didn't see any mention of timestamp filtering (to avoid backing up the original Ubuntu image files). Is that because it's straightforward? In any case, I'll have a look...

Re: End-to-end linux server install
Thanks again for your help Tobias.
Tomorrow I'll see if I can set up a backup to S3.
As I mentioned in our email conversation I want to back up only files I've changed since installing the Ubuntu 20 image - i.e. I don't want to back up any of the original Ubuntu image files. So I'll need to ...

Re: End-to-end linux server install
The install on Ubuntu worked. Thanks.
For expedience I used the handy option to run the web GUI without SSL by adding ?nossl=1 to the URL. That got me to a small login screen. It asks for a username and password. I didn't see anywhere to set those up. My Ubuntu user login doesn't work.
